A spectacular and large antique Second Empire French onyx, 18K gold and diamond "North Star" mourning locket backed pendant. The oval locket pendant in black onyx and applied to the front with an elongated many pointed gold star set with rose cut diamonds. The central diamond is 3mm in diameter, and in a pie crust setting above the locket, with eight further rose cut diamonds, each approximately 2mm in diameter, with further gold illusion beads. The locket back with an 18k gold frame with a glazed panel opening with a hinge with space for a photograph or lock of hair. The wide bail with a lobbed flower head mount with wriggle work edge. Marked on the fixed bail with an eagles head denoting 18K gold, 750 standard gold, France. France 1860s-70s. 28.6g The star 3.2cm x 1.9cm. In inches 1 3/8" x 6/8". The opening panel 3cm x 2cm.
